[okl4-developer] kernel and application debugging

I'm getting started with okl4.  I'm new to OS and embedded development, and
I'm trying to get setup with a reasonable debugging experience.
I noticed that the skyeye simulator has gdb remote debugging support, but
when I use this in the naive way the symbols (kernel and application) are
not found by arm-elf-gdb, even if I change the gcc flags for my application
to include debugging symbols.

What is the preferred method of debugging by okl4 engineers?  What about
application engineers?
