[okl4-developer] TI OMAP-35x

Hi Abi~

Well, I am getting laid-off from my job on June 10th. I
went to the Embedded Systems Conference in April, and
that's where I discovered OK-LABS, and OKL4. The OKL4
kernel (with Linux or OpenBSD on top) seems to be the
perfect match for what I want to do.

I am interested in building small "panel computers"--
with the TI OMAP35x MPU. These would have a small color
panel (from say, 320x240 at 3-inches diagonal to say,
800x480 at 7-inches diagonal). I want to sell them as
a front-panel GUI to companies that have existing
products, but no GUI yet. (Yeah-- I know-- this has been
done already, but I have a better idea-- a Macromedia -
Adobe Flash interface, and a super-secure O/S for
everything else-- the idea being ultra-high reliability).
These would be used (initially) for sprinkler, HVAC, and
security control panels-- with expansion to other markets
on an "as requested" basis.

The reason for the choice of the OMAP35x is that it has
enough DMIPS to play an "FLV" movie, without needing a
lot of power (like an x86 part would need). TI is
working on going from 600Mhz to 800Mhz by the end of this
year, so there is an upgrade path. Flash content can
really bring a CPU to it's knees, so more DMIPS is always
better.

The only other part I found that can handle the load at
less than 1-watt of power is the ADI Blackfin series of
RISC/DSP MPUs. These have a memory protection unit , but
no virtual memory-- so they *may* be compatible with OKL4
(I'm guessing). I did not see anything on any version of
the L4 kernel that mentioned support of the Blackfin,
either now or in the future. That is yet another reason
to lean towards the OMAP35x.

Since I will be out of a job at the time, I will need to
be able to do the development part with the least amount
of capital expenditure. I will worry about finding the
funding to manufacture and market the design after I get
something ready to show.

Anyway-- no big need to have this RIGHT NOW-- I just
wanted to know if anyone is working on it. I don't want
to duplicate effort.

~Thanks and Best Regards,
~Ken Peek

Hi Ken,

Cortex A8 has a pretty important place on our roadmap. I
hope we'll have support for it in our public release
sometime in the second half of 2008.

Do you have an urgent need for OKL4 on the TI OMAP-35x ?

Regards
Abi

Hi All~

Is there any work being done to port OKL4 to the new TI
OMAP-35x
chip(s)?

(The OMAP-35x line is based on the ARM CORTEX-A8
architecture).

~TIA,
~Ken
